“Change happens through movement, and movement heals” Joseph Pilates
I’ve run a lot of miles in my time, done a tonne of high impact high intensity classes, a handful of half marathons and 2 full marathons. I love that this has been my journey. I wouldn’t change a thing, because these are my lessons. Although part of me now questions what was I trying to prove. Physical strength made me feel accomplished, strong and resilient. But I did a lot of damage in the meantime and wore myself out. In 2015 though I started to get tired of turning up everyday to smash my body, the daily grind taking its toll. I craved more meaningful and medicinal movement. So I took a year off running and purely did yoga for 12 months. I had been a yoga lover since I was 18, but this was the first time for me to be doing only yoga everyday. During this time I remembered why I loved everything about Yoga. It felt like it was an exercise that was a way of showing my body I loved it. Its so much more than exercise, to me its a whole spiritual practice and way of life. But again, after a year of this I felt like I wanted some more strenuous activity. Lesson not quite fully learnt… I signed up to a functional fitness gym. And, I became a Functional Fitness Groupie. I did 1-2 classes every day. And again balance went out the door. I was “fit”, but some muscle imbalances resulted, and then injuries. One of the injuries saw my hamstrings start to tear, and Yoga became painful. Not blaming yoga. It was my own doing from years of over-doing it. In 2016 I saw a lot of health practitioners but it didn’t fix me. I was in pain and didn’t know what to do. This time in my life saw some of my biggest lessons in my 35 years on the planet so far.
This led me to Pilates. I was told it could help, so I gave it a go. And like magic Pilates changed my body. I got so strong and my injuries improved out of sight. For anyone that doesn’t understand what Pilates is about, I highly recommend you find a good studio and qualified teacher and try it out. Pilates is a hard workout! I now combine Yoga, Pilates, with some Running and Functional Fitness. But without Pilates this would have never been possible. After falling so in love with Pilates I had a plan for what I wanted to do with my life. I felt so passionate about these types of methods I did my Yoga Teacher Training with Power Living. Followed then by Stott Pilates Certification, and Barre. And I’m still learning. I’m passionate about learning more. Study of the body gave me a new awareness around movement and how to help not just myself, but others as well. And thats where true happiness lies, in helping others. Pilates has given me a strength that I never knew I had, and made my Yoga practice stronger and safer. Now when I occasionally injure myself, I can understand why, and help myself during recovery. I’m now a Pilates and Yoga Teacher. I teach all sorts of people, all with different goals. Find me at Body Mind Life, and Selph. Contact me here.
